Reverend Herbert “Herb” Wiley Phinazee went to be with
the Lord Monday, November 30, 2015 at his residence in Callahan, FL. He
left this life for Heaven one day after celebrating his 65th birthday and
preaching the Word of God which was his life’s calling. Herb was born
November 29, 1950 in Thomasville, GA to the late William & Fleeta Carlton
Phinazee. He had lived in Callahan for the past 25 years coming from Plant
City, FL and had lived there for 5 years. Herb was a proud veteran of the
United States Army, having served our nation in Vietnam. As he frequently
stated, he served for “1year, 11months and 22 days.” Herb’s ministry
career touched a multitude of lives for the Kingdom of God. He retired as
an ordained minister and pastor after faithfully serving as Lead Pastor at
Crossroads Family Worship Center in Callahan for 22 years, where he led 16
international mission trips and most recently attended and served at
Oceanway Assembly of God. Herb also served as Youth Pastor at Thomasville
Assembly of God, Thomasville, GA, Associate Pastor at Seminole Assembly of
God, Seminole FL, Lead Pastor at Plant City Assembly of God, Plant City FL
and Pastor to the faculty and student body at Sonshine Christian Academy,
Callahan FL. He was deeply involved as a Bible teacher, prayer partner,
mentor and friend to the many who loved him at his home church and in the
local area. Herb loved jet skiing, playing golf and was an avid Florida
State Seminole fan and was delighting in the great season they were having
this year. Some noteworthy achievements of his life include serving as
Chaplain with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, District Youth Secretary
for the Peninsular FL District of the Assemblies of God, Assemblies of God
Berean School of the Bible, Committee Facilitator for Peninsular FL
Assemblies of God, Assistant Presbyter to over 20 churches in the North
Jacksonville region of the Assemblies of God and was most recently the
Director of the Jacksonville School of Ministry located on the campus of
Oceanway Assembly of God where he and his family attended. His life
touched 1,000s of people in North Florida, Georgia, the State of Florida,
and around the world. His heart was even larger than his physical frame
and he will be missed by all. Survivors include his wife of 47 years,
Sandy; daughter, Ashley Nicole; brother, Donald Phinazee (Frances);
sister, Jackie Roddenberry (Reggie); sister in law, Sandy Strickland
Phinazee; numerous other family, friends and parishioners in churches he
served throughout the years. Services for Pastor Herb will be conducted
Friday, December 4 at 11am in the sanctuary of Oceanway Assembly of God,
12240 Sago Ave West 32218 in Jacksonville, with Pastor Danny Baggett and
Rev. Terry Rayburn officiating. Interment will follow on Sunday at 2pm in
Sunset Memorial Gardens in Thomasville, GA with Rev. Terry Rayburn
officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday beginning at 10am
at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Cedar Bay Funeral
Home, 714-1110. Donations in Herb’s honor may be made to Oceanway Assembly
of God.
