John Joseph Whitmore, 91

John Joseph “Johnny” Whitmore, 91, formerly of Harrisonburg, VA, passed away February 1, 2017, after a lengthy illness. He was born November 28, 1925, in St. Petersburg, FL, to the late Amos McKinley and Minnie Mitchell Whitmore. Johnny lived in St. Petersburg and in Philadelphia, PA during much of his early life, before he and his family moved to the Harrisonburg, VA area in 1937. He graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1943, and served his country in the U.S. Army/Air Force Division during W.W. II. On January 27, 1951, Johnny married Anne Sterling Taylor of Highland Springs. He was a poultry farmer and business owner for most of his life. Johnny was an avid hunter, fisherman, and also enjoyed bowling before his health declined.

He was a lifetime member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 450, and a past member of the Moose Lodge No. 1686 in Harrisonburg, VA. Johnny is survived by his wife, Anne; son, John R. Whitmore, of Henrico, VA; daughter, Anne W. “Kin” Eckert (Frank), and his grandson, John F. Eckert, all of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Frances Plecker of Harrisonburg, VA; numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister, Helen W. Diehl, of Mt. Sidney, VA. A memorial service will be held February 18, 2017, at 2pm at the Kyger Funeral Home, 3173 Spotswood Trail, Harrisonburg, VA. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Gardens.
